A Little History

I’ve been a woodworker because I’m a DIY (Do It Yourself). Back in high school (back when they allowed shop classes) I took a number of shop classes. All except what would be my career field. I had metal shop where I made chess pieces out of aluminum on a lathe and the knight was made by casting melted aluminum cans. More on this in a second. I took wood shop (twice) and made a chess board that was on a 4-inch pedestal made out of Mahogony. with a base the size of the chess board. The chess board had a wide area around the board to put the captured pieces. But wait, I also included a storage area beneath the chess board to store the pieces. I teacher was so impress he made me enter it into the state fair. Now the metal shop teacher also requested that my chess pieces accompany the chess board. It did win a prize, but I don’t recall what it was. My uncle sold. The one shop class I didn’t take, was electronic, which is that my career field I pursued.

I entered the Army right after High School and didn’t do any woodworking for quite a while. NO painting rock does not count. It wasn’t until I got out of the Military (8 Years) and kind of built my own home. Kind of was because I bought a prefab home. But I did all the prep work, and the finishing work myself. That included finishing the basement.

Over the years the first table saw a contractor saw, was replaced by a hybrid table saw. That’s a halfway between a contractor and a cabinet saw. it was a Jet and had a full metal top and was within my price range. Then finally I purchased my Delta cabinet saw which I use today. The safety features are easy enough to use, that I actual use them. The SawStop came out about the time I was researching which saw I wanted. But the safety features were not easy to use and in the end all that it had was the aluminum block that would stop the saw blade. Plus it was out of my price range. Yea, I know you can’t put a price on safety. But it looked like cheap China junk compared to the Delta. Enough said.

My main goal was to gather the equipment to make up a nice wood shop for after I retired. I have a very nice woodshop now, and it just so happened to also have this great view of the mountains. Which is where the shop name comes from. but believe it or not there are a lot of Mountain View Woodshops out there. SO to be unique we added the artisan to the name.
